How to Prepare for a Customer Success Case Study ๐Ÿš€

The case study round is not a knowledge test.

It's a simulation, and career changers who treat it like one outperform experienced CSMs who wing it.

TL;DR

  • Most customer success case study interviews ask one of three things: a churn-risk scenario, an onboarding plan, or a mock QBR.
  • Hiring managers grade four things: structure, prioritization, customer voice, and commercial thinking.
  • Prep is a system: my student Shaun Michelle Gannon arrived overwhelmed by a complex case study, did 3 sessions, and got the offer 15 minutes after the real interview ended.

Why this matters

A resume says you could do the job. A case study shows you doing it.

For career changers, that makes this round the great equalizer.

One student of mine was told after her July 2025 interview: "The case study was the game changer; the decision was made based on that."

CSM vs Account Executive: Which Role Actually Suits You?

Recruiters put CSM and AE jobs in the same "customer-facing" bucket. The two roles share a CRM and almost nothing else. TL;DR A CSM (Customer Success Manager) keeps and grows existing customers; an account executive (AE) closes new ones. In the csm vs account executive comp question, AEs carry bigger variable upside and bigger swings; CSMs earn a more stable base. Closers and hunters thrive in AE seats. Teachers, support pros, and service backgrounds usually map to CS. Why this matters Career...
